Meet Aurie.
Borinken Tax started with one person, an island, and a lesson she learned early: you don't build a lasting tax practice by cutting corners. This is the story behind the company.
From Puerto Rico, to New York, to Indianapolis.
Aurie was born and raised on the island of Puerto Rico, and moved to New York at fifteen. She began training with Liberty Tax in 2012 and started working in the tax-preparation industry in 2013.
Early in her career she worked for David Stauber and his family, and they shaped how she approaches this profession more than anything else has. The biggest lesson she carried out of those years was a simple one, and it's the reason she's strict about compliance today.
"You don't build a lasting tax practice through shortcuts, lies, or fraudulent returns. You earn good clients through honesty, transparency, and doing the work correctly."
She moved to Indianapolis in 2018 and kept building her tax career. Eventually she reached the point where she had to decide what came next — for herself and for her children.
Her partner, James, encouraged her to believe in what she had already built: her experience, the relationships she'd earned with her clients, and her ability to create something of her own. That encouragement is what gave her the confidence to take the leap.
That's how Borinken Tax came alive.
The name is the island.
Borinken is what Puerto Ricans call Puerto Rico — a name the island carried long before it appeared on anyone's map. Aurie grew up there, and when it came time to name the company, there was never really a second option.
It's also a promise about how the work gets done: in Spanish when that's easier, with patience, and with the understanding that for a lot of families a tax refund isn't abstract. Puerto Rico is where this started. Indianapolis is where Borinken Tax is building its future — and Tito, our coquí, comes along for both.
The credentials behind the practice.
- IRS Annual Filing Season Program (AFSP) — 2026 Record of Completion. Annual continuing education on federal tax law, ethics, and IRS Form 1040.
- Active PTIN. Active Preparer Tax Identification Number on file with the IRS.
- In tax preparation since 2013. From Liberty Tax to her own home-based practice.
- Bilingual — fluent in English and Spanish.
- IRS Nationwide Tax Forum — 2026. Continuing education direct from the IRS alongside tax professionals from across the country.
Borinken Tax requires its non-credentialed tax preparers to maintain an IRS Annual Filing Season Program (AFSP) Record of Completion each year, including the IRS-approved continuing education the program requires. As the practice grows and we add preparers, that standard applies to every one of them — so the person preparing your return has completed current-year federal tax law and ethics training.
